Update Sept. 6/2012: HorrorFan full movie now available on YouTube for the first time ever!
HorrorFan -The Movie!
Just what best describes a horror fan? Are we a bunch of violence-addicted losers with a penchant for seeing blood and guts? Are we a cult of outsiders that go against the established “Hollywood” fare? Or are we simply a group of people who just love the thrill of being scared? Horror films have been described as exploitation, escapist entertainment, mindless fodder; but if this is true, then why is the genre so popular?
To understand the horror movie genre, you must first look to the group that keeps the medium popular; the fans themselves. The fans, like the films themselves are as diverse as any group of people. Horror fans are not afraid to state their opinion and this program will give them a voice. It’s time to celebrate the fans of horror movies. If it were not for their dedication, the genre would not exist.
HorrorFan is an unbiased look at the horror fan. Unlike the picture that the mainstream media paints, horror fans don’t fit the stereotype. Horror is unlike any other type of film. Fan conventions, fan accessible actors, extras-laden “special edition” DVD’s, toys, collector’s items, movie props and fans as colourful as the actors on the screen set the horror genre apart from other types of films. Will horror movies ever gain the respect of the mainstream? Only time will tell, but thanks to the horror fan, the genre will live on and continue to scare and excite generations to come. This documentary is all about the unsung hero of horror...the fans!
How HorrorFan- The Movie came to be...
HorrorFan came to be from an idea the self-professed movie buff himself, Jason Robert Stewart. He's a guy who could tell you who was the second-unit director in JAWS 2 and could even tell you actor, Bud Cort has been doing since his appearance in the cult classic, Harold and Maude. He's one who sees films more as an event rather than simply a way to pass time. Movies have a profound influence on peoples lives, going as far as shaping personalities. Over the years Jason took a liking to the horror genre. There’s something about horror films that differeciates itself from other genres. Horror films are like rollercoaster rides. At first glance you’re excited, then when it starts, fear checks in, then that adrenalin rush that leads up to climax. Horror fans themselves differ than other movie watchers. Horror fans actually involve themselves in the movies, going as far as to, involve themselves into the making of the films, the merchandise, fanzines, websites and even getting a chance to meet their favourite horror icons.
The great thing about the horror genre is that its cast and crew are often the most accessible of all types of films. With a little research, and a lot of persistence, one can in fact make contact with their favourite horror star.
Jason's story is one that began innocent enough, with a teenage kid getting his first taste of independance by renting a stack of R-rated videos while his parents were away. The likes of Halloween, The Hitcher and When A Stranger Calls wore out the heads on the VCR. The movies were a source of wonder and excitement, something that never left this fan.
In the “golden age” of zine publishing from the mid-90’s, Jasonwould often write articles on his love for horror films, both obscure and mainstream. The new century brought a whole new source of horror fandom; the internet horror community. This presented an entire new list of opportunities. This is where the idea for HorrorFan began, as a tribute to horror and it's fans, each with their own unique story to tell!
